Thanksgiving not only brings house guests but also big Black Friday sales. If you’re in the market for a new pull-out couch, more chairs for the dining room, or dreaming of a guest-room refresh, there are many Black Friday deals to be had online and in stores. I’m looking forward to tracking down a few key items for the holidays, and luckily, alongside furniture, you can also find household goods marked down and holiday decor like string lights and faux Christmas trees, if you need some of those. When is Black Friday?

This year, Black Friday falls on November 29 and will likely continue throughout the weekend until Cyber Monday, December 2. Sales online often occur before Black Friday with early-bird promotions and markdowns, so it is possible to start shopping early. If you plan to furniture shop using Black Friday deals, note that they usually start at midnight (12:01am) after Thanksgiving in brick-and-mortar stores.

What deals should I expect on furniture?

Most well-known furniture retailers and brands will participate in Black Friday sales. Look for bundle deals and deep discounts on many types of indoor and outdoor furniture. You could save hundreds of dollars or more by taking part in these special post-Thanksgiving sales. If you are considering a whole room refresh, Black Friday weekend is an excellent time due to the steep discounts. Major brands jumped onboard the Black Friday furniture sales, including the heavy hitters, like Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Amazon, CB2, and Macy's, but also Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. These stores offered site-wide sales and individual discounts on furniture and homegoods.

How to get a good deal on furniture on Black Friday

It’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed at all the choices (I do!) in comfortable couches, chairs, and more—especially if you are shopping online over Black Friday. There will be many markdowns and discounts to consider before you make your purchase. With full-price furniture typically being expensive, it can feel exciting (and pressure-inducing) when prices are lowered.

Make a list of what you need, measure your room dimensions (extremely important for furniture shopping), and consider colors and styles. Right now, I’m looking at a few special items with specific dimensions. Don’t make the mistake I’ve made and buy something without measuring the space.

In the two weeks (or even now) leading up to Black Friday, sign up for emails from your favorite retailers, set up Google alerts, and make sure to follow all the brands you love on social media. Do some deep Internet dives to check the retailers' sites to learn about the timing of sales and any special announcements.

Some furniture stores, especially those that sell mattresses or beds, offer trials and returns. But during sales, they may change those policies up. Double-check the returns and trial periods for anything you buy on Black Friday.
