Last year's markdowns included Amazon, Target, JCPenney, Everlane, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Anthropologie, J.Crew, and more—all of whom offered discounts on shoes, clothing, and accessories. Black Friday is a great time to find holiday clothes and winter outerwear, like ski jackets and parkas, for less. I’m making a list of items I need and want (plus a list for gifts) ahead of time with an eye on what was on sale last year!

Black Friday deals can feel overwhelming due to the discounts and markdowns. The big sales make it easy to start shopping, but you could end up with items you didn't need or want. To avoid making a shopping mistake, before you hit the stores, make a list and check it twice. Items on the list can be gifts, clothing, accessories, or shoes you need but didn't want to buy at full price or a few special items you've saved for and now get to take home for less.

In the two weeks (or even now) leading up to Black Friday, sign up for emails from your favorite retailers, set up Google Alerts, and follow all the brands you love on social media. Do some deep Internet dives to check the retailers' sites to learn about the timing of sales and any special announcements. Hint: Some stores, like Nordstrom, are offering sneak peeks or early Black Friday sales, so start looking for steals and deals now.

I keep a digital Post-it note app on my phone to easily access my list of gifts and updates for my kids’ wardrobe and my own.

Select what you need (or want) in the correct sizes and cross-reference sale prices if something you’re buying is sold at multiple stores. Don’t be afraid to comparison shop and don’t buy something simply because it is marked down if you know you won’t wear it.

You can find Black Friday deals on fashion for everyone nearly everywhere, from department stores to specialty shops and even at big box chains like Target and Walmart. You can find these if you make a list of your favorite fashion retailers and visit their respective websites. Sign up for any member clubs, Google alerts, and online subscriptions, or even go into stores to ask.

This is a good time of year to jump back onto social media and check out your favorite brands, which will likely advertise upcoming Black Friday sales. If you keep it old-school, your local newspaper and television stations may run ads, too.
